How to Deal with Loc Envy

There are so many people with beautiful locs out there! It is very easy to develop loc envy and start wishing your locs looked like someone else’s. Envy can come from a very natural place – hopes for yourself and admiration for others. While what you feel may be simple admiration it can also signify that it’s time for a change. Take a look to find out, which it is for you.

Loc Admiration vs Envy

Simple loc admiration is completely harmless, and a great thing! You may have a passing thought of “it would be great if my locs were that thick/long.” However, if you still are ultimately content with your journey, it’s likely that what you feel isn’t real envy, but simple admiration. If the moment is right, let that person know how amazing you think their locs are!

When Loc Envy Becomes a Problem

Loc envy may become a problem if you start to notice:

  • Spending more time than not comparing your locs to others
  • Feeling unhappy when you look at your locs and wishing they looked like someone else’s

Ultimately, if when you think about someone else’s loc journey, you start to become unhappy with your own, then your loc envy may be a problem.

First, it’s important to note that loc envy is common – particularly in the beginning of your loc journey. At that point, your locs are not mature and are undergoing a lot of changes. Moreover, you are less likely to be at your ideal length or thickness. However, you can also have loc envy even when your locs are mature.

Tips for Dealing with Loc Envy

In order to deal with loc jealousy, it’s important to determine if you’re content with your locs and their potential.

  • For starter locs, consider if you’re happy with the size and know that starter locs change a lot as they mature. If you truly believe you/someone else made an error with your locs size, then look into getting that adjusted.
  • For mature locs, consider if you’re ready for change or just admiring what’s out there. As our locs mature, we may get bored, and that may exhibit itself as loc envy. Perhaps, you want to try bantu locs or loc twists to recreate a short loc style.

**A Quick List of Easy Loc Styles You Can Try Today**

If you are content with your locs, and still have loc envy interfering with the happiness you have your locs, then consider the below tips:

  • Reduce Social Media Consumption: This tip is likely the most important one when it comes to dealing with loc envy. With social media, it is so easy to compare your locs to others. You can see all the ideal things of someone else’s journey and none of the downfalls. You can pick someone for their ideal length, another for their ideal thickness, and another for their ideal color. What you don’t see is the time it took them to get to where they were, or all insecurities they may have.
  • Reduce Time Examining Your Locs: “A watched plant does not grow” as the saying goes. This tip can be helpful particularly for those with starter locs who are wishing their locs were longer. Overall, try and step away from the mirror and measuring tape!
  • Try a New Style: Trying a new style can be a simple tip to view yourself and locs in a new light. This can be equally great for those with mature or starter locs.

Overall, we have all had loc envy at some point or the other. The grass always seems greener on the other side. What’s important is to examine your own locs journey and remember to be confident and secure in yourself!
