If you’re thinking about locs or have them there are a few things to keep in mind when exercising with locs.
Time Between Washes
How often you wash your locs depends on how often and how intensively you exercise. The more often and intensely you exercise the more often you’ll need to wash your locs. If you exercise regularly and with moderate exertion, then going a maximum of one week between washes is a good starting point. If your scalp feels itchy in-between washes, then you should try adjusting to wash your locs more frequently.
What type of exercise will also factor in.
If you’re swimming without a swim cap, a deep wash is in order after every time you dip in the pool. However, I wouldn’t recommend that given chlorine can be tough on your hair. Instead, there are some good swim cap alternatives (like Soul Cap or the YGN Swim Turban) for locs out there.
Locs Styles for Exercising
When you exercise, you’ll typically try to keep your locs out of your face and off your neck. This is important as sweat collects around your face and neck, and you don’t want that on your locs. The line you have to balance is keeping your hair out of your face and not putting too much tension on your scalp.
Some suggestions for those with shorter locs would be hair clips or head wraps. If you have longer locs, you can use those methods too along with scrunchies or even using your own hair as a hair tie.
Impact on Maintaining Locs
If you like to exercise frequently, you should consider what retwist method you’ll use for your locs. Interlocking will be your best bet. This is because palm rolling will be more easily undone with the frequent washes. However, with interlocking, your retwist won’t come undone every time you exercise or wash your locs.
