Lauryn Hill’s locs were iconic. However, they were not more iconic than the star herself. By the year 2000 Lauryn Hill was mostly out of the public eye. Then, sometime between 2000 and 2001 she cut her locs. There are no interviews she’s given on exactly why she cut her locs. However, there is an interview she gave with Sway on MTV in 2001 after cutting her locs that gives some insight into her mindset. A quote that really rings true from her is:

“I think the Lauryn Hill of then was still looking to be validated. Was still hoping to be accepted, looking for acknowledgement from everybody else except for the one who made me… at this point… the things I’m led to do are the things I know he wants me to do. And when I say he I mean things that don’t necessarily get the thumbs up… But my soul…I have inner peace after having done them.”

In an interview with Variety she talked a bit more on it. “I felt like I was holding onto a piece of femininity that would make the world feel comfortable with who I am,” Waithe said. After deciding to cut her locs she felt “so free and so happy and so joyful, and I really stepped into myself.”

This is something relatable not just for celebs that cut their locs, but for many women.

Willow has cut her locs off twice now. The first time was due to her locs being weakened from pulling (ehemm hand in hair syndrome anyone?) as well as from dye and hair style changes.
